CE Marking and EU Compliance

WakeMe is an electronic consumer product with integrated radio functionality through Bluetooth Low Energy. The product is CE marked in accordance with the applicable EU legislation for radio equipment, electrical/electronic products and consumer safety.

The manufacturer is responsible for ensuring that the product complies with the applicable EU requirements before the CE marking is affixed. WakeMe’s CE marking is based on technical documentation, conformity assessment and an EU Declaration of Conformity maintained by the manufacturer.

The main regulatory framework applicable to WakeMe includes:

Directive 2014/53/EU — Radio Equipment Directive (RED)
WakeMe falls within the scope of Directive 2014/53/EU as radio equipment. The relevant essential requirements include:

Article 3(1)(a): protection of health and safety of persons and domestic animals, and protection of property, including the safety objectives of Directive 2014/35/EU, without applying the voltage limits
Article 3(1)(b): an adequate level of electromagnetic compatibility
Article 3(2): effective and efficient use of the radio spectrum in order to avoid harmful interference

Directive 2011/65/EU — RoHS
WakeMe is also assessed in relation to the restriction of hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment under Directive 2011/65/EU, including relevant amendments.

This includes review of component and supplier documentation for electrical and electronic parts, PCB assemblies, cables and other relevant materials.

Electrical Safety and Low Voltage Safety Objectives
WakeMe is powered by an external 5V power adapter. Although the product itself operates at low voltage, the Radio Equipment Directive requires compliance with the safety objectives of Directive 2014/35/EU without applying the voltage limits.

WakeMe has therefore been assessed with regard to normal and foreseeable use, electrical safety, thermal behaviour, internal battery integration, mechanical construction and safe operation.

The external power adapter supplied with WakeMe has its own conformity documentation from the adapter manufacturer.

Electromagnetic Compatibility and Radio Performance
WakeMe uses an Espressif ESP32-C3-WROOM radio module with integrated antenna. The module has its own manufacturer documentation and conformity documentation. In addition, WakeMe has been evaluated as an integrated end product.

Testing and technical verification have included:

  • radiated emissions
  • immunity to radio-frequency electromagnetic fields
  • electrostatic discharge behaviour
  • Bluetooth Low Energy operation in the final product
  • operation with the supplied power cable and adapter
  • functional recovery and preservation of critical settings after restart
  • product operation under normal and foreseeable use conditions

External testing has been carried out by DELTA Development Technology. Additional internal verification and functional testing has also been performed as part of WakeMe’s technical documentation and risk assessment.

RF Exposure and Health
WakeMe contains a low-power Bluetooth Low Energy radio. The product is assessed with regard to human exposure to electromagnetic fields from the integrated radio function.

The radio module documentation, antenna configuration, intended use and final product integration are included as part of the technical documentation.

LED Light Safety
WakeMe includes LED-based wake-up light functionality. The product has been assessed with regard to normal and foreseeable optical exposure from the LED light source, including intended use as a sunrise alarm and bedside lamp.

Battery Safety
WakeMe contains a small internal rechargeable LiPo backup battery. Battery integration is considered as part of the product’s safety assessment, including charging, temperature behaviour and operation under normal and foreseeable conditions.

Battery supplier documentation is maintained as part of the technical file.

WEEE and Producer Responsibility
WakeMe is electrical and electronic equipment. The product is labelled and handled in accordance with applicable requirements for waste electrical and electronic equipment, including the crossed-out wheeled bin symbol where applicable.

Technical Documentation and Declaration of Conformity
WakeMe’s CE marking is based on technical documentation maintained by the manufacturer. This documentation includes, where applicable, product description, design information, component documentation, supplier declarations, test results, risk assessment, user instructions, product labelling and the EU Declaration of Conformity.

Based on the applicable regulatory requirements, component documentation, external testing, internal verification and technical assessment, WakeMe is considered to comply with the relevant EU requirements for CE marking.
